John Cena has finally addressed what happened to The Rock and Travis Scott being involved in his now infamous heel turn.

The 17-time world champion will have the very last match of his career this weekend against Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Back at Elimination Chamber earlier this year, Cena turned heel for the first time in 20 years.

Cena turned heel at Elimination Chamber

He sold his soul to The Rock – who was flanked by rapper Travis Scott for reasons that are still unknown – in order to win the record-breaking 17th world title.

The initial heel turn was phenomenal. Sadly, The Rock never appeared again to explain how it happened and Cena never really talked about why he submitted to The Great One.

Speaking to Chris Van Vilet, Cena refused to get drawn into what the angle was meant to look like.

“Who cares? It doesn’t matter. We can talk about what could have been until the cows come home.

“And I think that’s what’s great about the people who are left standing. Certainly me and Cody. ‘What’s the change? This? All right, let’s go.’

The moment itself was epic TV

“I don’t dwell for one second on what could have been, because what could have been is Brock doesn’t leave for the NFL and there’s no John Cena.”

A very typical Cena non-answer to what the original plans were. Probably because there were none.

It’s been widely discussed by outlets like Fightful Select and certainly alluded to on the Netflix documentary Unreal that WWE were looking for something big to move tickets for Elimination Chamber and create buzz for WrestleMania.

Everything else was made on the fly and it seems a combination of Scott not taking to wrestling particularly well and The Rock’s schedule (and poor decision making regarding WrestleMania) pushed things in another direction.

Cena assured he is never involved in those backstage discussions.

“I don’t care. First of all, I’m always the last to know. It doesn’t trickle down to me. If you watch Unreal, that process is genuine.

“‘I talked to Rock and then the last guy I gotta call is John.’ I’m usually the last guy they call because I’m the easiest. ‘Yeah, let’s do it. No problem. I’m in.’”

The turn itself was magnificent viewing. It’s a shame they didn’t follow through with that angle and left Cena pedalling ‘toxic relationship’ with the fans as a reason to convert to the dark side.
