AEW’s Kenny Omega has been ‘thinking a lot’ about retirement after health issues

Kenny Omega has had plenty of injuries and health issues in recent years so how long does the 42-year-old have left?

Kenny Omega has had a tough time with injuries over the past couple of years and the AEW stalwart has finally admitted he has started to turn his thoughts towards retirement.

In a recent interview with CBS Sports, Omega spoke openly about his health following his battle with diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is a terrible condition where there are problems in the large intestine and it has restricted Omega to just 15 matches this year after missing the entirety of 2024.

Kenny Omega remains one of AEW’s biggest names

Now 42, Omega has done everything there is to do in the business besides a run in WWE. The fans have long pined for it to happen, but Omega himself is one of the founding fathers of AEW.

He is believed to be tied down to the company until 2027 and while he might squeeze in a WrestleMania match before it’s all said and done, it’s evident Omega isn’t thinking that far ahead at all.

“So I’d like to leave while I have some semblance of athleticism left in my body. I don’t want to completely work until the wheels fall off, and the person who leaves wrestling is one who barely resembles the Kenny Omega of old,” said the AEW star.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about when that timing would be. Another important thing for me is, when I finally do leave, whenever that may be, and this might sound odd, I don’t want people to be sad.

“In fact, the best-case scenario for me is that they don’t realise I’m gone at all. I’d love to have the peace of mind that the company has built enough stars so that their star is shining bright enough to distract from me stepping away from the scene.”

Omega’s work in Japan made him a big name in the industry

It would be quite the opposite of John Cena’s retirement tour in WWE where the now-Hollywood star signed on to do one more calendar year of WWE action culminating at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

Omega dominated the industry for a couple of years from around 2021 when he was the ‘Belt Collector’ and held several world titles, including the TNA world title.

If Omega did have to wrap it up early, he would go down as one of the best bell-to-bell wrestlers in the history of the industry. His work in Japan might make him the greatest foreign import – or gaijin – ever.

But let’s hope that won’t be the case and we have many more Kenny classics to look forward to.
