Introduction to Santino Marella: A Wrestling Icon
Santino Marella has been a regular fixture on TV for nearly 20 years and continues to be popular with wrestling fans. With a career spanning two decades, Marella has established himself as a beloved figure in the world of professional wrestling. But what makes him so endearing to fans? In a recent interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, Marella shared his insights on his enduring popularity.
Santino’s Rise to Fame
The “Milan Miracle” made his debut on the April 16, 2007 episode of RAW in Milan, Italy, emerging from the crowd to capture the hearts of fans. Marella believes that this unconventional introduction, combined with his comedic skills, helped establish him as a relatable and down-to-earth character. As he explained, “I came from the audience. I came out of a seat in the audience, and I think that’s one of the things. But also, I’m 5’10, 225 pounds. I’m not 6’8, I’m not an Adonis. I think I embody the people. I represent the people when I’m in there.”
The Power of Comedy in Wrestling
Marella’s comedic approach to wrestling has been a key factor in his success. In a world dominated by larger-than-life figures, his humor and humility have made him a standout. As he noted, “You’ve got a locker room of tough guys, jacked guys, badass guys—but not a lot of comedy guys. I think it was just a fresh take on things.” He also likened himself to “the ginger of the professional wrestling world,” explaining that just as ginger is a complementary element in a sushi meal, his comedic role adds a unique flavor to the world of wrestling.
Connecting with a New Generation
Marella has also been making waves with a new generation of fans. After working for IMPACT Wrestling under his real name, Anthony Carelli, he reprised his Santino character at TNA Hard to Kill 2023. He has continued to use the Santino name, thanks to WWE’s permission, and has been thrilled by the reception he’s received. As he shared, “The reactions I’ve been getting lately—it’s been like that for years. It’s just a thank-you ovation. Every new town we go to, I come out on stage, do a promo, and there are long Santino chants. It’s crazy.” He’s also been touched by the stories fans share with him at conventions, where he meets young fans who know his work inside and out.
