When Stone Cold Steve Austin ended a 19-year retirement from WWE to perform at WrestleMania 38, Kevin Owens was the lucky superstar that had the honour of facing him.

Kevin Owens is a wonderful talent and a sure-fire Hall of Famer when he is done with the business, but there might have been other dream matches for Austin in the eyes of fans.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Austin revealed Vince McMahon pitched the idea to him.

“It was in Dallas, Texas,” Austin said. “Vince flew down here and we had a conversation. And I thought about it for a minute.

“I love Kevin Owens, and he’s just – I think, from a safety standpoint, they picked Kevin. When they threw out just a couple of names, Kevin was the guy.”

It wasn’t billed as a match, but Austin and Owens had one

So it seems WWE made the call that Owens would be the man and it’s hard to argue with it.

Owens is as entertaining as he is safe and the resulting matchup was a classic.

Sometimes legends return to the ring and look a shell of their former selves. But Austin, in his late 50’s at that point, was able to give the fans what they wanted.

A good deal of thanks should go to Owens for that.

“Kevin Owens will end up in the [WWE] Hall of Fame,” Austin insists.

The Texas Rattlesnake, widely regarded as the greatest WWE star of all-time, hasn’t wrestle again since and at 61-years-old, it seems unlikely he would.
